CÓMO PLANEAR UN SURF TRIP

A SANTA TERESA, COSTA RICA

How to Plan a Surf Trip to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Planning a surf trip to Santa Teresa is not just about riding waves — it’s about immersing yourself in the culture, embracing the pura vida lifestyle, and exploring one of Costa Rica’s most magical beach towns. Here’s everything you need to organize an unforgettable surf experience:

When to go?

Choosing the right season can define your entire trip.

Santa Teresa has waves all year, but conditions vary depending on the time of year and your surf level.

  • Rainy season (May to September):
Great for consistent swells and bigger, more exciting waves. Perfect for intermediate and advanced surfers.
  • Dry season (December to April):
Expect sunny skies and smaller, cleaner waves — ideal for beginners or anyone looking for a more relaxed vibe.

Tip:
If you’re looking to combine good surf with fewer crowds, try visiting during the shoulder months like May or October.

Where to Stay?

Santa Teresa offers something for every type of traveler — from solo backpackers to those looking for a full surf retreat.

  • Budget Hostels:
Great for meeting other travelers and staying close to the beach. Many have a surf-friendly atmosphere and shared spaces to relax.

➡️ Looking for the perfect surf-friendly place to stay? Check out our hostel La Posada Surf Camp — just steps from the beach, surrounded by nature, and with a welcoming international community of wave lovers.

  • Surf Camps:
Some include surf lessons, boards, meals, and sometimes yoga or tours — ideal for first-timers or travelers who want everything organized.

Tip: Book early if you’re coming during peak season (like December or Easter).

Surf Equipment

You don’t need to travel with your board — unless you really want to. In Santa Teresa, you’ll find everything you need to hit the waves.

  • Board rentals:
At La Posada Surf Camp, we also offer surfboard rentals for all levels. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer, we have softboards, longboards, and more to match your needs.
  • Surf lessons:
If you’re new to surfing, many local surf schools offer full packages including certified instructors, board, rash guard, and transport to the best surf spots.

Tip:
Try different types of boards during your stay — wave size and style can change between beaches.

Transportation

Getting to Santa Teresa takes a little planning, but it’s absolutely worth it.

  • From San José:
You can take a bus to Puntarenas, hop on a ferry to Paquera, and then take a shuttle or local bus to Santa Teresa. Or take a domestic flight to Tambor (25 min) and a short taxi or shuttle ride from there.
  • Getting around locally:
Once you’re in town, the best way to move around is by renting an ATV or 4×4, especially since many roads are unpaved and rough.

Tip:
If you’re staying near the main area and plan to surf locally, walking is an option — but if you want to explore different beaches, having a vehicle is a huge plus.
